The history of the building
where the restaurant is located
Theo. F. Simmons purchased the
property now housing the New Prague Restaurant in 1872. The
building was built that fall, with the newspapers proudly noting
completion in 1873 with a fine sign painted by Youngson &
Johnson. Simmons sold everything from groceries to furniture
and mining supplies.
In 1881 local mining magnate William
Hamill tore down the front of this building as well as the two
properties to the south along Rose Street, replacing the individual
fronts with a single brick facade which would be known as the
Hamill Block.
Through the 20th century the building
housed a number of businesses including a grocery store. Over
the past 50 years the property has been used by several restaurants:
Curly's, The Pretzel, The Full Circle Café and now the
New Prague Restaurant.
